IN a move that underscores the growing commitment to recreational and community infrastructure, ABC Vancouver announced on Monday that it has advanced a motion to prioritize the long-awaited turf field upgrade at Beaconsfield Park.
Submitted by ABC Park Board Commissioner Angela Kate Haer, the motion responds to growing demand from local sports organizations and the opportunity to align field improvements with global excitement surrounding Vancouver’s role as a host city for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
(The motion put forward on Monday night by Haer was passed by the Park Board.)
“This isn’t just about upgrading a field – it’s about recognizing community needs and responding with action,” said Haer. “Beaconsfield Park is already a hub for local soccer, and with lighting infrastructure already in place, it’s a high-impact opportunity to deliver equitable, all-season access to sport.”
A turf field at Beaconsfield would complement the nearby field at Vancouver Technical Secondary School, creating a cluster of high-quality soccer infrastructure ideal for practices, leagues and tournaments.
Beaconsfield Park, located in the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood, is currently home to a heavily used gravel soccer field. Despite its popularity, the field is not scheduled for a turf conversion until 2030-2034 under existing plans.
Haer’s motion urges an accelerated timeline – citing its central location, existing infrastructure and potential for collaboration with Columbus FC (Italian Canadian Sports Federation) that anchors play at the park. Columbus FC has expressed interest in contributing private funds toward additional features like viewing stands, which would lower the financial burden on the City while maximizing community impact.
The motion directs staff to:
- Prioritize the project in the upcoming 2027-2030 Capital Plan;
- Work with Columbus FC and community stakeholders on project scope, cost-sharing and partnership opportunities;
- Report back by early 2026 with a detailed feasibility and funding framework.
ABC Vancouver said it continues to champion smart, community-driven investments in public recreation, especially in high-demand neighbourhoods. “This is a thoughtful, ready-to-go project that aligns with our goals to create accessible sport and more vibrant communities.” said Haer. “And with FIFA 2026 on the horizon, the time to act is now.”
