ON Sunday at approximately 9:53 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle fire and assisted Surrey Fire Department with traffic control on Highway 17 near Old Yale Road.

A semitruck was travelling westbound on Highway 17 when the driver smelled smoke. After the driver pulled over, the vehicle burst into flames. The fire resulted in the vehicle sustaining major damage.

Due to the large diesel spill that originated from the damaged fuel tanks on the semitruck, Highway 17 westbound will remain closed to traffic for several hours to allow for an environmental cleanup.
