THE Fijian community in Surrey came together in large numbers at Newton Athletic Park last weekend (August 3-4) for the inaugural Fiji Canada Expo 2024 and a soccer tournament.
The two-day event organized by the Fiji Canada Businesses Association (FCBA), in collaboration with the Fijian Soccer League of Greater Vancouver (FSLGV), was a resounding success.
The Fiji Canada Expo, which featured an antique car show and a pageant show and the winners, offered return air tickets to Fiji Islands in a draw as Fiji Airways was the major sponsor. The Expo also had business booths, food vendors, Kids Corner, soccer and much more which attracted people of different ages and backgrounds.
Additionally, the Dulari Memorial Sports Club soccer tournament garnered widespread attention from the soccer community, drawing fans and players from various cities across the country — Toronto, Edmonton, and Calgary.
The President of the Fiji Canada Business Association, Kavin Chand, recognized the tireless efforts of his committee members and the contributions of the FSLGV and the general public as the key factors in the success of the event, which went viral on social media.
“I would like to express my gratitude to all food vendors, business booths, Fiji Airways for the return Vancouver-Nadi tickets for the draw, and all the soccer clubs and participants for their hard work and contributions towards making this event a success,” said Chand.
“The jam-packed pavilion at Newton Park during the soccer matches over the two days is a testament to the power of collaboration among local Fijian organizations and people, resulting in a positive and vibrant harmonious community atmosphere.”
Surrey Councillor Linda Anis was the chief guest and praised the organizers on her Facebook page, acknowledging the vibrant Fijian community in Surrey.
With the runaway success of the event this year, many are now calling for the event to become an annual affair.
“With everyone’s support, we will strive to improve and expand next year,” said Chand. Some 4,000 people attended the two-day event.
