ABBOTSFORD – Ajai Singh, son of former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Purna Singh, was on Thursday jailed for 90 days by a court in Abbotsford for sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl.
Ajai Singh, 38, who was visiting Canada with his ragi jatha, was arrested on February 9 and charged with sexual misconduct with the minor girl.
After serving his jail sentence, Ajai Singh will be on probation for 18 months. But the probation period has no meaning as Ajai Singh will be deported to India immediately after his sentence period is over. He won’t be eligible to enter Canada ever again.
Ajai Singh, who was employed as a hymn singer by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), was suspended from his job following his arrest.
Ajai Singh was reportedly staying with a family at the time of his shameful misconduct.
The 38-year-old Singh was charged in February this year on two counts; sexual assault and sexual interference with a person under the age of 16.
