18-year-old man fatally shot by Vancouver Police

VANCOUVER Police say they have notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC after an 18-year-old man died this morning in a police-involved shooting.

VPD officers responded around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday to a 9-1-1 call reporting the sound of gunshots near the playground in Clinton Park, near Grant and Penticton streets in East Vancouver.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man with a firearm. Shots were fired, and the suspect was shot by police.

The suspect was taken to hospital, but subsequently died. No police officers were injured and no victims related to the initial 9-1-1 call have been located.

The IIO said it is investigating to confirm the details of the incident and to determine what role police played in the man’s death.

The IIO asks anyone with relevant information about this incident to contact the witness line toll free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form at iiobc.ca.
