Surrey Police Service launches inaugural Student Police Academy

SURREY Police Service (SPS) is launching its inaugural SPS Student Police Academy, a one-week program running from July 7-11, designed for Grade 11 and 12 students.

The Academy will provide knowledge about the policing environment, provide hands-on experience through various scenarios and continue to foster an understanding between SPS and the community it serves.

“Surrey Police Service is looking forward to hosting our first Student Police Academy. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to gain insights into the policing profession and to enhance their fitness levels and problem-solving skills,” says Superintendent Lav Mangat, Community Policing Bureau, South Division. “We are confident that the students and our SPS officers and staff will enjoy the benefits of working together over the course of a very challenging and rewarding week.”

A unique aspect of SPS’s Student Police Academy is that the one-week long program will be taking place at the state-of-the-art SPS Training Centre, where students will be exposed to diverse team exercises, fitness sessions, legal studies, enhancing communication skills, de-escalation strategies, teamwork and problem solving.

As there will be a daily, rigorous physical component at the Academy, students should be active and physically fit to engage in the fitness sessions, including the POPAT (Peace Officers Physical Abilities Test), which is a series of physical tests and obstacles that mimic on-the-job demands for police officers.

Eligibility requirements for each student:

  • Starting Grade 11 or 12 or graduating in June 2025
  • Desire to learn about a career in policing
  • Physically fit
  • Be able to complete and pass a criminal record check
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident

The SPS Student Police Academy has 28 spots available and there is a $150 registration fee, which includes SPS athletic gear and other related items.

Each student is required to attend for all five days of the course and to develop and provide a fitness log leading up to the Academy.

The selection process for the potential participants is as follows:

  • Complete and submit required forms
  • Selection interviews
  • Final selection
  • Parent information session
