LABOUR Minister Jennifer Whiteside has appointed Raji Mangat, KC, as a director to the WorkSafeBC board of directors, effective immediately. She has been appointed a public-interest board member for a two-year term ending May 31, 2028.
Mangat is a practising lawyer with more than 20 years experience in constitutional and administrative law. She recently served as executive director of West Coast LEAF, a non-profit legal organization.
Mangat fills a vacancy created when William Laird Cronk was appointed chair of WorkSafeBC’s board of directors on February 26, 2026.
The WorkSafeBC board of directors serves as a steward of WorkSafeBC and B.C.’s workers’ compensation system. The Workers Compensation Act requires that the board includes representation from a range of professionals with relevant expertise. In addition to representatives from sectors such as health care and occupational health and safety, the board must also include representatives of workers, employers and the public interest.
Mangat’s most recent role has been as executive director of West Coast LEAF, a non-profit legal organization working to improve gender justice.
She serves on the boards of Legal Aid BC, Health Justice and Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre. She is an adviser to the Law Commission of Canada and has served on the national committee of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
Mangat is an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria’s faculty of law, where she teaches a course on civil liberties and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She was selected as a delegate to the 2022 Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference and received the Law Society of British Columbia’s 2019 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award.
She received a juris doctor degree from the University of Victoria (2003), a master of arts in International Affairs from Carleton University (1999), and a bachelor of arts in political science and international relations from the University of British Columbia (1997). In 2021, she completed a certificate in community capacity building from Simon Fraser University.
Mangat was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal and was designated King’s Counsel in 2024.
