5) Event name: Billy Bishop Goes to War

Description: ACE Productions | Damon Calderwood and Gordon Roberts. One of the most widely produced plays in Canadian theatre, this two-man musical play dramatizes the life of Canadian World War I fighter pilot, Billy Bishop. One actor plays the part of Bishop in word and song, although he is also called upon to dramatize 17 other parts, and the other provides all the accompaniment on the piano and also sings. The play has been performed in over 150 independent productions since it debuted more than 30 years ago, winning the Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Award, the Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award, and the Governor General’s Award for English Drama. “Missing this show is a mistake for anyone who is even a casual fan of theatre.  Not only does the show make for an entertaining piece of theatre, but it also shines a light on one of Canada’s great military heroes. – Fort McMurray Today.

Description: 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the year of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. We celebrate his genius as a musical ground-breaker and one of the most influential musicians in history, along with another musical titan of his time, Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich. During their lives, both composers’ works represent the struggle of the individual against external forces – of time, oppression, war and fate. The concert finishes with the sublime lullaby of the Andante from Franz Schubert’s PianoTrio in B flat major. Trio Op 11 – L.V Beethoven (1797) “Gassenhauer” (Street song). Piano Trio No 2 in e minor Op 67 – Dmitri Shostakovich (1944). Piano Trio No 1 in B flat major D.898 – Franz Schubert (1827-28).
