THURSDAY UPDATE (1 P.M.)
The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General in reply to The VOICE’s query emailed this statement:
“Privacy laws and security considerations prevent BC Corrections from sharing details related to specific incidents or from confirming where individuals are or have been in custody or under community supervision.”
SOURCES say that one of the accused in the homicide of Khalistan advocate Hardeep Singh Nijjar was attacked at the Surrey Pretrial Centre.
(Sources say the attack reportedly occurred in the gym.)
The VOICE emailed the after-hours contact for Surrey RCMP at about 9 p.m. The Surrey RCMP on Thursday morning asked us to contact the Public Safety Ministry about it and we have asked the ministry for information on this.
Indian nationals Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28, and Amandeep Singh, 22, have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection to Nijjar’s murder. Amandeep Singh is in custody in Ontario, while the other three are in the Surrey detention centre.
Nijjar was assassinated on June 18, 2023, in a parking lot of Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara where he served as president.
Superintendent Mandeep Mooker, Officer-in-Charge of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), announced the arrest of Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh on May 3.
Eight days later, on May 11, IHIT announced the arrest of Amandeep Singh, who was already in custody for unrelated firearms charges by Ontario’s Peel Regional Police.
Earlier this month, the Nijjar murder case was adjourned for the fourth time as defence lawyers have yet to receive all the documents they have asked for.
