Calgary homicide victim identified in social media as brother of Burnaby homicide victim Jaskeert Kalkat

SOUTH Asian social media is reporting that the person killed in Calgary has been identified as Gurkeerat Kalkat of Surrey. He is the younger brother Jaskeerat Kalkat.

The VOICE had mentioned on Saturday evening that sources had told us that the Calgary homicide victim was a relative of Jaskeerat Kalkat.

Sources had also claimed that the Coquitlam homicide victim was also related to Kalkat, but now other sources say that is not so.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has yet to identify the Coquitlam homicide victim.

One media report says that in 2018, Gurkeert Kalkat was sentenced to three years in federal prison for trafficking fentanyl. This followed an undercover drug operation led by Calgary Police.

As reported here on Saturday, Calgary Police said in a press release that they were investigating a targeted fatal shooting that occurred in the community of Bankview on Saturday, May 22 at approximately 5:30 p.m. [4:30 p.m. Pacific Time]. Police were called to the 1800 block of 26 Avenue S.W. for multiple reports of gunshots in the area. Police located a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle, which was parked in the alley behind 26 Avenue S.W. The man was pronounced dead on scene.

Shortly after the shooting, police responded to a vehicle fire located in the 2200 31 Avenue S.W. that is believed to be related. According to witnesses, multiple suspects then entered a second vehicle, a blue, four-door car, possibly a Subaru Impreza or Legacy, and fled the scene.

Officers flooded the area, however suspects have not yet been located.

“While the investigation is in the early stages and details remain limited, we believe this was a targeted attack. Homicide detectives are in the process of speaking with witnesses and canvassing the area for CCTV. Investigators are also working with law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions to share information,” police said.

“The level of violence demonstrated in this incident is extremely concerning to us,” said Staff-Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “We are dedicating resources from across the Service to this investigation to ensure that the individuals involved are held accountable.”

  1. I don’t know why this young man’s death affected me so much. I don’t know him and neither to I condone gangs and their activities. Too many young people are dying and it seems the community is saying that it’s their fault they were gangsters. Why are they killing each other? Why? Who are their mentors? Who benefits from their deaths
