City of Surrey among Canada’s ‘Best Diversity Employers’ for third consecutive year

THE City of Surrey has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers in 2021. This is the third consecutive year that the City has received this award.

“Surrey is a city that has been built and strengthened by our diversity,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “This award is proof that the City of Surrey leads by example when it comes to ensuring that our workplace is not only a reflection of our community but is a place that is also fully inclusive. I am proud that the City’s longtime progressive hiring practices is now being recognized at a national level.”

Now in its 14th year, Canada’s Best Diversity Employers is a competition that recognizes employers that have exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs, including programs focused on women; members of visible minorities; persons with disabilities; Indigenous Peoples; and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered/Transsexual (LGBT) peoples.

The City of Surrey is being recognized for successful diversity and inclusion initiatives, which include:   

  • Providing diversity and inclusion training for staff in topics such as autism awareness, human rights and respectful workplace
  • Developing a mental health strategy that supports the health and wellbeing of all staff
  • Recruitment initiatives like the Women in Firefighting Workshops to help breakdown barriers and improve diversity within its teams

The City of Surrey was also recently recognized in a separate category as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People.
