OSCAR-NOMINATED screenwriter, director and producer Deepa Mehta will receive an honorary degree from Simon Fraser University during convocation ceremonies June 10-13
Mehta’s controversial films have attracted significant awards and recognition, as well as a Governor General’s award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada.
Mehta, was in Vancouver last July for the Indian Summer Festival, sponsored by the Consulate General of India, Vancouver, the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Simon Fraser University (SFU).
Her award winning films include Fire, Earth, Water and Heaven On Earth.
Her numerous awards include the Lifetime Artistic Achievement from the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, the Global Leadership Award from the Indian International Film Awards and the Outstanding Contribution to International and Local Cinema Award from the Toronto South Asian International Film Festival. She has been awarded with many honorary degrees from various academic institutions.
Her latest film is an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel, Midnight’s Children.
