THE City of Surrey has completed the construction of eight new pickleball courts in South Surrey’s Crescent Park. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 15 marked the occasion.

“I am excited to be celebrating the opening of eight new pickleball courts in the City of Surrey,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “With the completion of this project, there are now a total of 73 outdoor pickleball courts in Surrey, 30 of which are dedicated solely to pickleball play.”

He added: “Council recognizes access to outdoor sporting infrastructure and amenities is critical to keeping a community active, healthy and connected. That is why Council has placed a priority in ensuring our recreational amenities keep pace with our growth.”

Pickleball is a sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.  It is played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net and with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. Pickleball can be played as doubles or singles and can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels.

Crescent Park is a large 52-hectare community park located on 132 Street in South Surrey. It is one of over 800 parks the City of Surrey manages. More than 200 parks have active amenities such as sports fields, sport courts, playgrounds, community gardens or picnic areas and over 600 parks protect natural areas, open space, and biodiversity as part of the larger green infrastructure network.

This project was approved in the 2021 Five-Year (2021-2025) Capital Financial Plan and is among more than 20 projects included in the ‘Surrey Invests’ Capital Plan.
