THE Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC announced on Wednesday that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence in a March 2024 police-involved shooting incident in Surrey where a man sustained serious injuries.
The IIO BC said that the Chief Civilian Director had reviewed the evidence – including statements of civilian witnesses, video footage, medical records, scene analysis, and police reports. This matter is therefore not being referred to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
In the evening on March 17, 2024, members of the Surrey Police Service received a complaint regarding a man reported to be in possession of a weapon outdoors at Guildford Town Centre near 152 Street and 104 Avenue. When officers located the man, an interaction followed which resulted in one officer discharging their firearm. The man sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO BC said that investigation is now concluded. However, due to concurrent police investigation related to the incident, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO’s website until that process has concluded.
