Man charged after threatening staff with needle in New Westminster

AT approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, New Westminster Police received a 9-1-1 call from staff at a local grocery store. According to staff, a male was observed stealing merchandise from the store before threatening to stab people with a needle. Officers rushed to the scene and located someone matching the suspect description at the Sapperton SkyTrain Station.

Since his arrest, Shane Murray Stanway, 41, of Langley has been charged with one count of robbery.

“These employees were just trying to do their job,” said Sgt. Justine Thom. “It’s appalling that staff were subjected to this type of abuse and it’s extremely fortunate that no one was seriously injured. Excellent work done by our patrol officers who were at the scene within minutes.”
