Man charged with multiple offences in January 2023 shooting in Surrey

SURREY RCMP announced on Thursday that 21-year-old Sijoula Obatusa has been charged following an investigation into a shooting that occurred in January 2023.

On January 7, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of gunshots fired in the 6000-block of 170 Street. The Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit assumed conduct of the investigation and investigators determined an attempted robbery had allegedly occurred resulting in one person being assaulted and a single gunshot being discharged into the air.

Through investigative steps, investigators learned this was a targeted incident and the parties were known to each other.

BC Prosecution Service has approved seven charges against Obatusa who has been remanded into custody,

He is charged with robbery with a firearm; use firearm for extortion; use imitation firearm for offence; careless use of a firearm; assault with a weapon; possession of a firearm without a license; and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.

“We recognize it is essential for us to update the public about ongoing investigations,” said Cpl. Sarbjit Sangha, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer. “Our investigators conduct thorough investigations leading to charges against those who carry out acts of violence in our community, and this is a prime example.”
