Man dies in custody in Coquitlam, BC RCMP notify IIO BC

THE BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Coquitlam resulting in one man’s death.

Just after 7:30 a.m. on January 17, frontline officers from the Coquitlam RCMP were called to a residential building in the 600-block of Thompson Avenue for a report that a man was causing a disturbance outside the building. Officers located and arrested the man.

The man was held in custody to appear in court on Tuesday (January 18). At approximately 8:37 a.m. on Tuesday, while conducting prisoner checks, the man was found to be unresponsive. Despite life-saving efforts by police, fire and EHS, the man could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead.

The IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s death.

All aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC.
