Murid Ghulam found guilty of aggravated assault in 2021 New Westminster stabbing

ON May 29 2021 at approximately 2 a.m., New Westminster Police Department patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia SkyTrain Station. Officers located a man suffering from life-threatening stab wounds to his stomach and back.

Over the following days, detectives from the Major Crime Unit identified and safely arrested a suspect.

On May 25, 2022, Murid Ghulam was found guilty of: one count of aggravated assault.

“From the life-saving measures performed by the responding patrol officers to the detailed investigation completed by our Major Crime Unit, we’re proud of the work done on this case,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar on Thursday. “We are committed to working with our community to provide a safe environment for all, if incidents like these happen we are committed to investigating them to the fullest extent possible.”

Police said that although Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators could not confirm the motive behind the stabbing.

The suspect has been held in jail since his arrest and will be sentenced in the near future.
