AT approximately 2 a.m. on July 25, the New Westminster Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call from someone who said he saw a truck hit a barrier on the Queensborough Bridge at a high rate of speed. An officer located the driver and a passenger in the damaged vehicle in a nearby parking lot.
The officer determined the vehicle had been reported stolen and the two men were arrested. When searched by police, one suspect was in possession of a loaded firearm.
“This underscores how the public serves as our eyes and ears,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “They have trust that the New Westminster Police Department will attend and investigate. In this case, it resulted in a dangerous weapon being taken off our streets.”
One man was released at the scene and the second suspect was transported to cells. He was released with numerous conditions. It is anticipated that charges related to stolen property and firearms will be forwarded to Crown counsel.
The New Westminster Police Department thanked the witnesses who called police after observing the collision. If you are witnessing a crime in progress, or fear for your safety or the safety of others, call 9-1-1.
