THE New Westminster Police Department is encouraging parents and guardians to take steps to safeguard children and have conversations with their children about online harms. This warning follows one week that saw three child sexual exploitation investigations.
Officers and the Victim Assistance Unit are here to help and support anyone who is a victim of sextortion or online luring, police said.
“Parents need to understand that when children are manipulated into sharing sexual images of themselves it may be very difficult for children to seek help afterwards for fear of consequences,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver on Friday. “It’s critical that parents and guardians stay informed about online risks and have ongoing conversations with their children about internet safety so children will reach out for help and report these crimes.”
The New Westminster Police Department strongly recommends the Canadian Centre for Child Protection as a resource for parents, youth and children. Their website contains guides for parents, research, and support for caregivers. If you are aware of a child that is involved in self/peer exploitation that involves threats, coercion, or extortion, officers encourage you to file a police report by calling 604-525-5411.
