NEW Westminster Police are introducing the NWPD Drone Program. Transport Canada-certified officers will operate drones when an aerial view can improve safety or assist in investigations.

Drones may be used to search for missing people, document crime scenes, photograph serious collisions, assess insecure buildings, and support officers during high-risk incidents. They may also be used during major events or emergencies to help keep the public safe. The real-time aerial view will help officers make informed decisions quickly, which can save lives.

“Police departments across the region are already using drones to keep people safe, and we’re proud to bring this capability to New Westminster,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver on Wednesday. “The real-time aerial view will help our officers in situations where every second counts.”

The use of drones will be purposeful, tied to specific incidents, and used in accordance with federal law and provincial privacy requirements. All flights are recorded and the video will be retained when it has investigative or training value. The New Westminster Police Department extends its thanks to its public safety partners at the Delta Police Department for assistance in supporting this initiative.
