Prime Minister Trudeau and other leaders on Diwali

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday issued the following statement on Diwali:

“Today, we join millions of people in Canada and around the world to celebrate Diwali.

“On this joyful holiday, families and friends gather to pray, exchange gifts, share meals, and decorate their homes and temples with colour and the glow of diyas to mark the triumph of light over darkness. Diwali is also a time to reflect on the values of selflessness, optimism, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate.

“As we mark Diwali, we also recognize the many contributions of Canadians from Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist communities to our country’s cultural fabric, and we celebrate their role in making Canada the diverse and inclusive place we call home.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish everyone celebrating a very happy Diwali.”

PREMIER David Eby issued the following statement:

“Today, B.C. and other parts of the world will light up as people celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights.

“Diwali is a sacred time for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains as they celebrate the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. To mark the occasion, many people will light rows of candles, diya lamps and lanterns in their homes, temples and communities.

“In B.C., many community organizations are hosting family-friendly Diwali festivals that are open to everyone. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Diwali and enjoy some traditional music, dance, art and food.

“Diwali is a time of community, connection and culture. It also reminds us that the many cultural communities in B.C. make our province strong, vibrant and bright.

“Happy Diwali to all who are celebrating.”

PIERRE Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement:

“Tonight, as the sun goes down and darkness creeps over the horizon, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains around the world will light lanterns, candles and diyas, driving back the shadows in a vibrant celebration of light. Every year, this timeless display inspires millions as they gather with their families and friends to celebrate Diwali.

“For generations, the Festival of Lights has brought joy and encouragement to those celebrating in Canada and around the world. Its deeply rooted customs and traditions bring comfort amidst hard times. For many, Diwali is a time of profound spiritual renewal as they reflect on its message of hope and the ultimate victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness.

“While the stories and traditions of Diwali vary, its message of hope continues to unite people from different religions and walks of life. Together, they rejoice in its powerful message of strength and reassurance.

“So tonight, as you push back the dark of night through the power of light, I hope that the spirit of Diwali continues to bring peace, hope, and renewal to all those taking part. May the values of faith and family bring constant joy to you and your families in this time of celebration.”
