Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Eby extend best wishes to everyone celebrating Navratri

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau in a statement on Navratri on Sunday said: “Over the next nine nights and 10 days, members of the Hindu community in Canada and around the world will gather to celebrate Navratri.

“Navratri is one of the most important and sacred festivals in the Hindu faith, commemorating the victory of the goddess Durga over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. Often seen as a celebration of feminine energy, it is a time for friends and family to come together and honour century-old traditions with prayers, joyous performances, special meals, and fireworks.

“For all Canadians, Navratri also offers an opportunity to learn more about the rich history and culture of Hindu communities and to recognize their invaluable contributions to Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. Today’s celebrations remind us that diversity is one of Canada’s greatest strengths.

“On behalf of my family and the Government of Canada, I extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating Navratri this year.”

PREMIER David Eby said in a statement marking Navratri: “Tonight, Hindus in British Columbia and around the world will gather to celebrate the festival of Navratri.

“During the next nine nights and 10 days, Hindu communities will gather to honour and give thanks to the deity Durga, the feminine energy and her nine forms, in a celebration of women’s empowerment. On the 10th day, the festival of Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, symbolizes the victory of good over evil and marks the beginning of preparations for Diwali.

“Families and friends will gather to pray, fast and enjoy traditional dances and meals.

“Navratri is a reminder to us all that the diversity of our province is one of our strengths. On behalf of our government, I want to acknowledge the many contributions of the Hindu community to our province and send best wishes to everyone celebrating.

“Shubh Navratri and happy Dussehra!”
