STUDENTS from Ocean Cliff Elementary, Fraser Heights Secondary, Queen Elizabeth Secondary, Semiahmoo Secondary, and SAIL are among winners at the BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair, according to Surrey Schools.
This year’s fair, held virtually in response to cancellations of numerous science fairs due to COVID-19, offered a digital platform for inquisitive Grade 4-12 students to share their science projects. Students received detailed feedback from experienced mentors along the way via project interviews.
The winning projects from Surrey covered wildfire prediction and prevention, bioplastic decomposition, disabled parking accessibility and enforcement, cosmic radiation detection, prosthetic hand movement in subjects with spinal cord injuries, and a wearable device that measures mental health. In total, the fair received 195 student submissions and 170 projects.

Prizes included Visa, Triple O’s Earnest Ice Cream and Mahony False Creek gift cards, as well as family memberships to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and the Museum of Anthropology, and admission and books to the Royal BC Museum.
