Shipping containers turned into social housing

Canada’s first recycled shipping container social housing has been unveiled on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The housing on Alexander Street is constructed with recycled shipping containers and will provide 12 units of safe, affordable subsidized housing for women on the Downtown Eastside.

Vision Vancouver councillor Kerry Jang says it’s a concept he’d like to see catch on around the city.

“The density housing concept. And I think it’s one that’s going to, you know, build some new housing in this city. There is such a shortage.”

The container housing can be build for half the cost of conventional construction.
