THE New Westminster Police Department Street Crime Unit has made two arrests and seized a large quantity of illicit tobacco in connection to an investigation of the sale of contraband cigarettes.
In the summer of 2025, the Street Crime Unit with the support of numerous NWPD specialty units executed a search warrants at a residence in Coquitlam, a business in New Westminster, and multiple vehicles. During the search, officers located approximately $980,000 cash and 1,100 cartons of contraband cigarettes.
“Keeping illegal tobacco off the streets helps make our communities safer and supports local businesses that work hard to ensure they are following the law and selling legal products,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “Neighbours in New Westminster who suspect the sale of illegal tobacco are asked to reach out to the New Westminster Police Department.”
He noted that profits from illegal tobacco trade often help finance other organized crime activities, such as human trafficking, firearms and drug smuggling. Illegally manufactured products also pose public health and safety risks as they lack regulatory controls and inspections oversight. Additionally, Canadians lose out on tax revenue that would otherwise be used to support government-funded initiatives.
