SURREY City Council will on Monday night consider awarding the next contract for the 132 Street Road Improvements from 80 Avenue to 84 Avenue.

This project is part of the City’s broader plan to widen the 132 Street corridor from 72 Avenue to 84 Avenue from two lanes to four with improved sidewalks, to reduce traffic and support growth in Newton.

“This is a major corridor in Newton and carries significant traffic,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “These upgrades will reduce congestion, improve safety, and keep up with the rapid growth in this area of our city. With Surrey’s population projected to soon reach one million people, expanding our transportation network is essential to ensure efficient, reliable and faster travel for everyone.”

The City’s phased approach for 132 Street includes:

  • Phase 1 (72 Avenue to 76 Avenue): Construction began in early 2025 and is anticipated to be complete by early 2026.

  • Phase 2 (80 Avenue to 84 Avenue): Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and be complete by late 2027.

  • Phase 3 (76 Avenue to 80 Avenue): Currently in the design phase with construction planned for Fall 2026, subject to securing railway and Council approval.

Staff are recommending the phase 2 contract be awarded to GB Projects Ltd., the lowest bidder, in the amount of $4.9 million.

The project will be funded through the City’s 2025 Transportation Budget, with 87 per cent from development cost charges and 13 per cent from general revenue.
