Surrey man charged in assault on taxi driver

AN investigation led by the Surrey RCMP Major Crime Section has resulted in charges being approved against a man for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver and causing damage to the cab.

On June 22, Surrey RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a man who had allegedly robbed a taxi driver and then damaged the taxi prior to fleeing the scene. The suspect was located and arrested a short time later without incident. He was later released pending further investigation. Fortunately, the taxi driver did not sustain any physical injuries during the incident.

The Surrey RCMP Major Crime section took conduct of the investigation and on September 10, charges of assault with a weapon and mischief to property were approved against 31-year-old Richard Nelson. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

On September 26, Surrey RCMP officers located and arrested Richard Nelson for his outstanding warrant. He was released by the courts with conditions which include no contact with the victim and not to be in possession of weapons.

As this matter is now before the courts, police said no further information will be released.
