THE Surrey RCMP Community Response Unit is investigating a series of door knock pranks as multiple residences have sustained damage.

The communities of Newton and South Surrey have become subject to an ongoing social media inspired frenzy of door knock pranks. The decades old prank, known as nicky nicky nine doors or ding door ditch, has evolved into cases of harassment and mischief.

An ongoing investigation has resulted in the identification of some pranksters, as police are now seeking potential criminal charges. Those that have been identified are all in their teens. Parents are encouraged to speak with their teens about the potential repercussion in acts such as this.

“While this type of behaviour may not have started with malicious intent, the observed behavior of these individuals speaks to a complete lack of regard for the prank recipients and their property,” said Sgt. James Mason, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, on Wednesday. “If the goal is to make yourself known, you may get more than you bargained for.”

* If you observe this type of behaviour, or become a victim of this behaviour, call the Surrey RCMP non-emergency immediately
* If you are a victim of this behaviour, remain indoors and do not confront the suspects involved
* Video surveillance can assist police in identifying suspects and support court evidence
* A well-lit entranceway and front door may not prevent, but may deter this type of behaviour
