A second victim is now dead in Saturday’s shooting at South Surrey Athletic Park and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is urging witnesses to come forward after what appears to be a targeted shooting.
On July 30, at 2:45 p.m., Surrey RCMP received reports of a shooting at the South Surrey Athletic Park, located at 14600 20 Avenue. Police found three individuals, all suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite all efforts, one of the injured men succumbed to his injuries on scene. The remaining two victims were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Now a second victim has also succumbed to his injuries.
IHIT has taken conduct of the investigation and is working closely in partnership with Surrey RCMP, BC Coroners Service, the RCMP Forensic Identification Section and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC).
Investigators believe the shooting to have been targeted and do not believe there is any further risk to the public.
At this time, investigators are working to confirm the identities of the victims and any nexus to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict.
“The onset of any investigation is critical as we move swiftly to secure time-sensitive and perishable evidence,” said IHIT Sgt. Timothy Pierotti on Sunday. “We are appealing to anyone with dash cam video to secure the footage and to contact us immediately.”
IHIT is asking that any witnesses or anyone with dash camera video who attended the area of the South Surrey Athletic Park between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. or who has any information regarding the shooting, to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
