Well-respected Staff-Sgt. Lindsey Houghton is Surrey Police Service’s first Media Relations Officer

SURREY Police Service (SPS) on Thursday announced Staff-Sgt. Lindsey Houghton as its first Media Relations Officer. He will be responsible for providing media and the public with information related to public safety and police incidents taking place in Surrey.

The VOICE has known Houghton for a couple of decades. He has been a leading figure in the fight against gangs and in educating kids about the dangers of getting involved in gangs.

On November 29, when SPS assumes command for policing operations in the city and becomes the police of jurisdiction, Houghton will be responsible for communications relating to operational policing matters and the point of contact for journalists and newsrooms.

“It was vitally important for Surrey Police Service to identify the right person to be our first media relations officer,” said Chief Constable Norm Lipinski. “Lindsey Houghton has an excellent reputation in the policing community, and of equal importance, he has a long history working with the media and the public. I am confident that Staff-Sgt. Houghton will do a great job as the primary communicator of all the important work that is done by SPS and our people.”

Houghton has 26 years of previous policing experience which includes 17 years with the Vancouver Police Department, where he was the Media Relations Officer between 2008 and 2012, and nine years with the Organized Crime Agency of BC (OCABC), working within the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC). Since 2012, Lindsey oversaw the CFSEU-BC Community and Public Affairs Section as well as creating and overseeing the Gang Intervention and Exiting Team. The “End Gang Life” initiative, which he created, has earned him deserved recognition by the Province of British Columbia, police leadership and agencies across Canada, the media, and the communities he has served.
