THE City of Surrey has begun construction on 64 Avenue between 152 Street and 164 Street to widen the road to four lanes and add a multi-use pathway to make it safer for residents to cycle and walk along the corridor.

The $10 million project aims to improve road safety, alleviate traffic congestion, and support the city’s continued growth. This work marks the final phase of the City’s long-standing plan to widen 64 Avenue, creating a continuous four-lane east-west corridor from 120 Street to 196 Street.

“I’m proud our Council is completing essential road projects like 64 Avenue, a vital east-west corridor connecting Newton and Cloverdale communities,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “By prioritizing strategic infrastructure investments, we’re addressing the needs of our rapidly growing city, reducing traffic delays, enhancing road safety, and strengthening connectivity to ensure Surrey remains a livable, thriving community for all residents. In all, our Council is investing $446 million in roads and transit over the next five years as part of our commitment to building the infrastructure that will keep Surrey connected and moving.”

Key road improvements will include:

  • Additional vehicle lanes (from two to four);
  • Multi-use pathway for cycling and walking on the south side;
  • Road paving along 152 Street between 64 Avenue to 68 Avenue; and
  • Road repairs along the railway crossing at 64 Avenue and 152 Street intersection.

Project construction will require a short closure of 152 Street near the 64 Avenue intersection to speed up railway crossing resurfacing work.

“The widening of 64 Avenue between 152 and 164 Streets completes the final missing link in a continuous four-lane corridor stretching from Delta to Langley,” says Rafael Villerreal, Director of Transportation. “As a designated truck route and key east-west arterial, this upgrade enhances regional goods movement, supports local traffic, and improves safety and connectivity for all road users with the addition of a new multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.”

Construction of 64 Avenue widening from 152 Street to 164 Street is scheduled for completion in 2026. Construction of road widening on the earlier phase from 177B Street to 184 Street is almost complete.
