Broadcaster on Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi and BC Lions Football Punjabi

VANCOUVER – The BC Lions continued their impressive run Sunday, defeating the defending Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-16 at BC Place in the annual Watermelon Smash.

The Lions entered the game on a three game winning streak and with an opportunity to move into third place in the West after Winnipeg’s loss to Edmonton earlier in the week.

Nathan Rourke had another outstanding performance, completing 22 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Jevon Cottoy for a 23-yard touchdown. Cottoy’s first of the season. After the score, Cottoy celebrated by finding his mother in the stands and giving her a hug and the football.

Rourke later found Hatcher for a four yard touchdown as the Lions built a 27-6 lead. Saskatchewan’s only touchdown came after Rourke’s lone interception, with Trevor Harris connecting with Dhel Duncan-Busby for a 32-yard score.

Cottoy finished with six catches for 110 yards, while Zander Horvath rushed for 43 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, Parker McKenna and Darnell Sankey led the Lions with seven tackles each, while Lorenzo Mauldin recorded two sacks.

The BC Lions Football Punjabi pre-game show also welcomed a special guest, Moe Sahota. Sahota shared stories about how he became a Lions fan and remembered celebrating the Lions’ historic 1964 Grey Cup championship as a young boy in Lake Cowichan.

For me personally, having Mo on the show was especially meaningful. I thanked him for helping bring Punjabi language education into BC high schools in 1997. Had he not taken that step, there’s a possibility I may never have had the opportunity to broadcast sports in Punjabi. I am incredibly thankful to him, and it was great having him as part of our pre-game show.

The victory moves BC to 5-5 and extends their winning streak to four games.

Next up, the Lions travel to Ottawa to face the 0-10 Redblacks, looking for their fifth straight win and a chance to move above .500 for the first time this season.
