BC Liberals call for support for LNG industry

BC Liberal MLA Mike Bernier on Monday called for the NDP to see the potential in ethical, transitional LNG and clarify its support for expanding this resource. Bernier also called for transparency around the NDP’s continued mixed messaging about the future of LNG in British Columbia. The Peace River South MLA noted that we were in the midst of a global energy crisis due to Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Bernier highlighted the thousands of communities, families, and businesses that are at risk if the government does not support the energy sector. B.C.’s resource industry can address the needs of the province and LNG can contribute to the global energy crisis as a cleaner alternative to burning coal.

He said that the NDP had continuously failed to deliver a clear stance on LNG and its potential as a cleaner, greener, transitional fuel for British Columbia. Despite countless calls for transparency from the NDP, the future of LNG in B.C. remains blurry, he added.

RENEE Merrifield, MLA for Kelowna-Mission, highlighted the benefits of LNG as a cleaner transitional fuel source that can assist B.C. and the globe in its reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and help countries in Europe and Asia reduce their reliance on energy sources from authoritarian regimes.

Merrifield criticized the government for not taking into account B.C.’s LNG industry in the CleanBC plan and highlighted how B.C.’s annual rate of greenhouse gas emissions reduction won’t allow the province to meet the reduction targets highlighted in the CleanBC plan.
