BURNABY RCMP are warning the public of a bank card scam which has recently victimized two seniors.
Over the past week, Burnaby RCMP has received three similar reports of a new scam involving debit and credit cards.
In each instance, the victim received a call from someone advising they were from a bank and stating that the victim’s bank cards were compromised. The suspect then stated they would be sending bank staff to their residence to pick the cards up and investigate. Almost immediately, a suspect attended each residence.
On two occasions, the victims, both seniors, gave their cards to the suspect and were victimized for approximately $3,000 in one case and $5,000 in the other case.
In the third case, the suspect fled immediately after the victim advised they would be confirming the information with their bank.
“We want everyone, including seniors, to be aware of this scam, especially given the in-person component. Never give personal or financial information to anyone you don’t know,” said Cpl Mike Kalanj with Burnaby RCMP. “If you have been the victim of a fraud similar to this, or any type of fraud, please contact police immediately.”
The investigation in Burnaby is ongoing.
Burnaby RCMP would like to remind the public that if you don’t initiate the call, you don’t know who you’re talking to. Beware of unsolicited calls where the caller asks you for personal information, such as:
- Your name
- Your address
- Your birthdate
- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Your credit card or banking information
