Both Murid Ghulam and victim associated to known Lower Mainland gangs
ON Saturday, May 29 at approximately 2 a.m., New Westminster Police Department patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia SkyTrain Station.
Officers located a man suffering from life-threatening injuries and provided assistance. The victim was transported to the hospital by BC Ambulance.
An initial search for a suspect involved support from the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.
New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit investigators assumed conduct of the investigation. The New Westminster Forensic Identification Section was called to process the scene. Investigators were able to identify and locate a suspect.
On May 31, 26-year-old Murid Ghulam of New Westminster was arrested and since then he has been charged with one count of attempted murder.
“Detectives worked with our policing partners from across the Lower Mainland region and we located and safely arrested a suspect,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “The suspect remains in custody until his next court appearance on June 9.”
Although Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators have not yet been able to confirm the motive behind the stabbing.
