ON Monday, October 20 at approximately 4 p.m., a New Westminster Police Department officer was conducting proactive patrols when a group of men was seen on the second level of the Front Street parkade. One of the men appeared to be in possession of a handgun.
Officers quickly responded and safely arrested four individuals. The incident resulted in a significant police presence in and around the parkade.
The handgun was seized and upon closer inspection, it was found to be a replica firearm. Officers also learned that the group had been filming a music video. This incident is still under investigation and charges are being considered.
“To film a music video with a replica firearm and no regard for film industry safety protocols is extremely reckless,” said Communications Officer Hailey Finnigan. “There was zero signage this was a film set.”
The New Westminster Police Department is urging the public to stop and consider the dangers of imitation firearms. When police respond to any call involving a firearm, it is treated as legitimate until an investigation can determine otherwise. For the safety of the communities, the New Westminster Police Department strongly discourages the purchase and use of these items.
