THE Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) said on Thursday that it is investigating a motor vehicle collision involving a police vehicle in Abbotsford.
The IIO said that information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that at about 4:05 p.m. on February 20, a police vehicle engaged in an unrelated investigation was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle, a GMC Envoy, near the intersection of King and Gladwin roads.
The driver and sole occupant of the Envoy sustained injuries in the collision and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Both officers in the police vehicle were also taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and initial investigative steps will seek to determine the extent of the driver’s injuries and the events surrounding the collision.
The IIO is asking anyone who observed or has video footage of the collision to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
Abbotsford Police said that impairment is being considered as a factor in this collision. They said the investigation is in its early stages and is being led by members of the Abbotsford Police’s Major Crime Unit, supported by additional Abbotsford Police officers and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS).
Police said that King Road, between Columbia Street and Jackson Street, remains closed as officers gather evidence at the scene. Anyone who witnessed this incident or may have dash camera footage is asked to contact Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.
