India’s External Affairs Minister says he would resume issuing of visas if diplomats are provided safety

INDIAN External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Sunday that he would like “very much to resume the issuing of visas” in Canada if Indian diplomats are provided safety in Canada in accordance with the Vienna Convention, India Today reports from New Delhi.

India Today said news agency ANI quoted him as stating: “Because ensuring safety and security of diplomats is the most fundamental aspect of the Vienna Convention. And right now that is what has in many ways been challenged in Canada that our people are not safe, our diplomats are not safe. So if we see progress there, I would like very much to resume the issue of visas. My hope would be that it would be something which should happen very soon.”

The Hindu newspaper said that an informed source told it that India is reviewing the security situation that led to the suspension of visa services in Indian missions in Canada.
