Man charged following damage to New Westminster business, assault of staff member

ON July 26 at approximately 7 p.m., New Westminster Police received a call from a witness advising there was an assault in progress inside a New Westminster business.

According to witnesses, the man threatened staff inside and there were sounds of breaking glass. Officers located an individual matching the suspect description standing in the 600-block of Columbia Street.

The suspect was arrested and transported to the New Westminster Police Department cells.

“This behavior is not tolerated in our community,” said Sgt. Justine Thom on Tuesday. “I want to remind all business owners and staff, if you ever feel unsafe, call 9-1-1 and we will be there.”

Gima Deng, 27, of Calgary, Alberta, was charged with one count each of assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, mischief, and causing a disturbance.
