VANCOUVER Mayor Ken Sim on Wednesday issued the following statement marking the declaration of Hedy Fry Day:

TODAY, I am proud to proclaim October 25th Hedy Fry Day in Vancouver. The Honourable Hedy Fry was first elected as a Member of Parliament 30 years ago on October, 25th, 1993. Since then, she has gracefully served her city, community and country for decades, becoming the longest serving female Member of Parliament.

Her steadfast commitment to public service is evident in her profession as a doctor and the number of roles she has served in government, including as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health.

MP Fry has served and continues to serve as role model to women and young girls, highlighting that there are no limitations to what one can accomplish. She has a great record of upholding the rights of women, both through her past role as Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women and her current role as Special Representative for Gender Issues. October is Women’s History Month in Canada, and the Honourable Ms. Fry has no doubt cemented her place in the Canadian History books, while paving the way for countless women and girls who will find inspiration in her life’s work and legacy.

MP Fry is a key member and distinguished leader in our city. She is an awesome representative of Vancouver, and it is my privilege to recognize her accomplishments today.

Thank you Hedy!
