Off-duty VPD officer helps arrest alleged carjacker

AN alleged carjacker was arrested by Vancouver Police on Thursday morning after forcing a driver from his car, crashing into another vehicle, and flipping the stolen car on its roof.

Vancouver Police responded around 5:30 a.m. after reports that a Good Samaritan stopped to help a person who appeared to be in distress near Granville Street and West 37th Avenue. The car owner agreed to drive the stranger to the police station.

Once in the car, the suspect allegedly pulled a weapon on the driver, forced him from the vehicle, and drove away. The suspect eventually collided with another vehicle before flipping the stolen car on its roof and coming to a stop near Granville Street and Broadway.

An off-duty VPD officer who witnessed the carjacking helped arrest the alleged carjacker, as other police officers were responding to the scene.

The 30-year-old suspect is currently in hospital and in police custody.

The victim did not sustain any serious physical injuries.
