A South Asian radio station — Swift 1200 AM — at 130 Street and 76 Avenue seems to have been the latest target of extortionists in Surrey as staff arrived there on Tuesday morning to discover evidence of a shooting.
The shooting could be related to the radio station’s reporting on the ongoing extortions targeting the South Asian community. Surrey Police said they and other police agencies have spoken with the business owner in the past.
Surrey Police Service said in a press release at 2:25 p.m. that its officers were investigating an overnight shots fired incident that has resulted in property damage to a Surrey business.
At about 11 a.m. on September 30, frontline officers responded to a call from staff that they believed their business had been shot at sometime overnight. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that damage to an exterior door had been caused by gunshots. There were no reports of any injuries.
There were five bullet holes on the two front doors, according to our photographer.
Officers remain on scene and will be examining the area for physical and digital evidence, with the Provincial Extortion Task Force taking over the lead on the investigation.
Anyone with information about this incident or anyone who may have been in the area of the 13000-block of 76 Avenue between 8 p.m. on Monday, September 29 and 6 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30 and witnessed the shots fired or suspicious activity is asked to contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 25-85681 (SP), the Surrey Extortion Tip Line at 236-485-5149, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.
