Surrey crews pick up 1,500+ bags of garbage in spring ‘Clean Blitz’

CITY of Surrey crews have been out in full force this month doing a spring clean-up blitz of Surrey’s neighbourhoods to keep the city clean, beautiful and safe. The two-week clean-up began on May 1 and in all, staff removed 1,598 trash bags of litter and 1,833 illegally dumped items.

“Keeping the city clean and safe are top priorities for our Council,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke on Wednesday. “We are committed to enhancing the livability of Surrey, and initiatives like the Clean Blitz are a key to achieving this goal and instilling community pride. I’m also proud of the great programs that the City is offering to make it easier for residents to do their part in keeping the city clean, such as the free waste drop-off program currently underway.”

This was Surrey’s second Clean Blitz of the year following the winter blitz in February where over 1,900 bags of litter were picked up.

Residents can do their own spring cleaning and take advantage of the following programs:

  • Drop off waste for free (up to 100 kg) at Metro Vancouver’s Central Surrey and North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centres. From May 1 to September 25, each household gets one trip, providing plenty of time for residents to utilize this free drop off service. For details, visit surrey.ca/wastecentres.
  • Book a free curbside pickup of unwanted large items all year round with the City’s Large Item Pick up Program. Booking is easy online at surrey.ca/largeitems or call 604-590-7289 (Option 3).
  • Borrow a free Cleanup Kit—includes gloves, litter pickers, and bags. Join family-friendly clean up events this summer at surrey.ca/ourcity.

Whether leading intense cleanup efforts or providing programs to make it easier for residents to clean up, the City is committed to keeping Surrey’s neighbourhoods clean, safe, and vibrant.
