MICHELLE Rempel, Conservative critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, slammed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday following comments made by the Immigration and Refugee Board that wait times for case backlogs are not expected to decrease.
Rempel said: “For months now, Canada’s Conservatives have been calling on Justin Trudeau to come up with a plan to deal with the crisis he helped create at the Canada-U.S. border.
“What we are left with today are serious backlogs and case delays that stretch across the entire immigration system. In fact, the Immigration and Refugee Board confirmed that wait times are not expected to decrease from the current 20 months that it takes for a claim hearing.
“Coupled with the fact that only 157 individuals out of almost 29,000 have been deported for illegally crossing into Canada, it is clear that the Trudeau government has failed to demonstrate that they have this situation under control.
“These delays are extremely unfair for those who enter Canada legally and threaten to undermine the security and integrity of our entire system. Even with this information, the Prime Minister still has no answer and no plan.
“Canada’s Conservatives will continue to fight to make sure we have an immigration system that is fair, compassionate, and prioritizes people around the world who truly need our help. Justin Trudeau has failed on these counts.”
