‘Caps finish home stand with comeback win
VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC concluded their May home stretch with a 2-1 comeback victory against Western Conference side FC Dallas on Wednesday evening.
The ‘Caps started the first half in control and gained momentum early on, as forward Déiber Caicedo’s pressure led to a ball won back in the final third. Lucas Cavallini’s strike then flew right past the post inside the fifth minute of the match.
FC Dallas also pushed for the opening goal of the match with Nanu’s cross from the right side finding forward Jáder Obrian, with his shot inside the box then saved by goalkeeper Cody Cropper in the 32nd minute.
Eventually, the away side opened the scoring right before the end of the first half, as a counterattack opened up by Obrian was then connected to Jesús Ferreira. His pass found winger Paul Arriola, who converted the opportunity making it 1-0 Dallas going into halftime.
Sartini’s side looked to respond quickly in the second half with a give and go between Michael Baldisimo and Ryan Raposo outside the box, but Raposo’s shot went past the top of the net in the 46th minute.
The second half was all pressure from the ‘Caps. The Blue & White’s patience in the build up led to Russell Teibert finding Cristián Gutiérrez on the left side. A cross from Gutiérrez was then connected to forward Brian White, who headed in the tying goal of the match in the 71st minute.
Another quick counter attack gave an opportunity for the ‘Caps, as White found Cavallini inside the box, his deflected pass then rolled to Cristian Dájome, who shot the ball inches away from the far post in the 74th minute of the match.
With time running out, centre back Ranko Veselinović was taken down in the box. Cavallini calmly converted from the spot making it 2-1 in the 92nd minute.
The ‘Caps continue their busy May schedule with a road match against Charlotte FC this Sunday, May 22. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. PT, catch all the action live on TSN and AM730.
