EU mulls new guidelines to woo international students

The European Union is considering changing existing policies to woo international students to pick its member nations for education, a top diplomat said Friday.

Greek Ambassador Ioannis Raptakis said that the EU countries also wished India would make it easier for European students to come here for education.

“EU and member states recognized the problems of international students and the reasons why countries like the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and even China were fast becoming favorites for international students, including those from India,” he said.

“EU is trying to capture reforms as part of the Comprehensive European Migration Policy. The new proposals will make it easier for third country (non European, especially developing country) students and researchers to pick EU nations for further education,” the ambassador said. He was delivering a lecture organised by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs’s India Centre for Migration, in association with the European Union Delegation to India and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The Greek envoy said his and many other countries realized they would have to consider and adopt new guidelines to make EU more attractive for students.

He said the major problems faced by the students include issues like the visa or residence permit being shorter than their courses, that family members cannot accompany them and curbs on mobility within the EU.—IANS

bhanguManmeet Singh has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 24-year-old wife, Ravinder Bhangu. The killing took place at the Sach Di Awaaz newspaper office in Surrey in July, 2011.

Ravinder Kaur Bhangu was working there as an administrative assistant.

During the attack, Bhangu ran through the offices yelling ‘save me’, but despite the efforts of a Good Samaritan, who stepped in to try and stop the attack, the 24-year-old died at the scene from multiple stab wounds.

Singh was arrested at the office and has been in custody ever since.

The couple had been married in 2009, but had split up a few months before the attack.

Dal Khalsa demands list of all those killed during Operation Bluestar

AMRITSAR: The Dal Khalsa, which took out a march in Amritsar Wednesday culminating at Akal Takht to observe the anniversary of Operation Bluestar, called upon the Parkash Singh Badal government to release the list of all those killed during that army operation as law and order was a state subject.

Dal Khalsa President Harcharanjit Singh Dhami who led the march called Genocide Remembrance Parade said law and order being the state subject, the state government must have this list. In case the list was not with the state government or it can take refuse in this argument, we would like to know whether any Akali Dal government has sent any formal communication to the government at the centre demanding the list at any time. He said the people have a right to know the names of these who were martyred by the army during Operation Bluestar.

He said wounds of June 84 had not healed and we still nursed agony and anguish against the tyranny of the Indian state and the role of the Congress party in particular.

The organisation adopted a resolution saying, “Twenty-nine years ago, with the attack on Darbar Sahib, the then government of India laid the foundation stone for independent state. The sentiments of sovereignty that was strengthened by army attack on Darbar Sahib have not been buried with the passage of time and change in political scenario. There may not be any public manifestation of such sentiments but all Sikhs desire to be self-ruler”.

Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said the aim behind today’s ‘Genocide Remembrance Parade’ was to reiterate the cause for thousands Sikhs who laid down their lives in 1984 while defending the attack on their faith. Twenty nine years have passed, thousands have died and equal numbers had suffered long imprisonments but no problem, no issue of Sikhs had been solved till date. He said the sacrifice of the June 1984 martyrs would never be allowed to go in vain.

Khalsa Action Committee chairman Bhai Mohkam Singh said Sikhs would never forget or forgive the crimes of June 1984″.

Activists of the organisation carrying Sikh Flag marched in the treets of the holy city carrying placards and signboards on which it was written, “remembering the Genocide of Sikhs at the cruel hands of India” along with the damaged photographs of Akal Takht Sahib. They chanted slogans in favour of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and denounced the government of India for committing what they called the “crime against the humanity”. The protestors pledged to keep the aspirations and mission alive.

India bans public display of lingerie mannequins as anti-rape measure

MUMBAI — Mannequins displaying lingerie and other skimpy clothing may soon be banned in India’s cosmopolitan city of Mumbai as an anti-rape measure, according to Associated Press.

The municipal council overwhelmingly passed a resolution last month barring stores from putting scantily-clad mannequins outside their shops. The municipal commissioner has yet to give the required approval of the resolution.

City council member Ritu Tawde said she proposed the mannequin ban because such displays degrade women and could provoke men to attack them.

Indians have increasingly demanded stronger protections for women since the gang rape and killing of a student on a bus in the capital of New Delhi in December.

“Such people get provoked by mannequins. After all, a mannequin is a replica of a woman’s body. That’s why I oppose it, because mannequins do not suit Indian culture,” Tawde said.
However, shop owners will still be able to display mannequins how they want inside their stores, she said.

Business officials ridiculed the resolution, saying it would have no impact on violence against women.

“We are living in the 21st century where these kinds of things, all porn, the movies, the pictures, all these things are available on websites, available on mobiles. (A) mannequin hardly makes any difference to the people,” said Viren Shah, president of the Federation of Retail Traders’ Welfare Association.
Tawde said Internet images were very different than the mannequins.

“If someone wants to watch pornography on the net, that is a conscious choice that he is making. In this case, the mannequins are everywhere and people don’t have a choice. They run into them when they step out of their homes and walk on the streets,” she said.

IPL spot-fixing: Vindu, Meiyappan get bail

ipl

Mumbai: The Esplanade Court on Tuesday granted bail to eight persons who are accused in the betting scandal, including actor Vindu Dara Singh Randhawa, and former CSK chief Gurunath Meiyappan

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate MN Saleem ordered the release of both men, along with all other accused including Ramesh Vyas, Pandurang Kadam, Ashok Vyas, Neeraj Shah, and Prem Taneja , “on the ground of parity”, and has directed them not to leave the country. The court had already granted bail to Pravin Bora and Pankaj Shah.

Dhoni comes under attack from former cricketers

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has come under sharp attack from some former cricketers for his alleged conflict of interest for having stakes in the sports management company which handles him and three of his Indian teammates

MS Dhoni found himself in a controversy when it came to light that he had 15 per cent stake in Rhiti Sports, which also manages Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha, besides the Indian captain. However, the firm has made it clear that Dhoni was a shareholder only for a brief period, and currently has no stakes.

But former Indian cricketers and sports management executives feel that Dhoni should not put himself in such a position where questions could be raised about a possible conflict of interest

“Obviously, the documents that have come out indicates that it has been a conflict of interest as far as Dhoni’s involvement with Rhiti Sports is concerned,” former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad told PTI. “I don’t mind if an ex-cricketer is acting as an agent for a living. But when I see Pragyan Ojha being relegated to second choice left-arm spinner suddenly and Ravindra Jadeja being valued at USD 2 million after being banned for trying to cut underhand deals in IPL, I guess something is wrong. “Also if the company didn’t have sufficient money, how did they issue shares and paid it back,” Azad pointed out.

Latika Khaneja of Collage Sports management said there was an obvious conflict of interest and also raised questions about Rs 210 crore deal that was struck between the captain and the company. “Obviously there is conflict of interest. The first question that crops up is Rs 210 crore minimum guarantee money which is huge. Ravindra Jadeja was managed by my company from 2006-2011. But if a player comes and wants to join another firm, you can’t stop him and especially if the firm is also managing the Indian captain,” Khaneja said.

Another former cricketer Maninder Singh also felt if the captain indeed had shares it was a clear case of conflict of interest. “But who do you expect to stop the rot when the BCCI President has gone against everyone who has stood up for the game…basically the President has been saving the captain who is also vice-president in his company,” he said.

In 2010, Dhoni signed up with Rhiti Sports reportedly for Rs 210 crore, an average of Rs 70 crore a year, the costliest deal in Indian cricket. Interestingly, two of these players — Raina and Jadeja — are part of the same IPL franchise, the Chennai Super Kings, which is also captained by Dhoni. Ojha had joined Rhiti Sports during Australia’s last tour of India.

Neymar signs 5-year contract with Barcelona

Neymar became the eighth most expensive signing in football history by moving to Barcelona in a deal worth 57 million euros, uniting the Brazil star with Lionel Messi in a formidable attacking partnership

Neymar signed a five-year contract with club president Sandro Rosell yesterday, after choosing Barcelona over Real Madrid in an intense two-year bidding war between the fierce Spanish rivals. Barcelona vice president Josep Bartomeu revealed the club had expected to pay about 40 million euros, but that “the interference of other clubs” inflated the price, an allusion to Madrid.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kaka, Luis Figo, Hulk and Fernando Torres have cost a club more than Neymar. Barcelona’s previous most expensive transfer was when it paid 45 million euros to Inter Milan for Ibrahimovic in 2009 plus sent striker Samuel Eto’o the other way. Neymar laughed shyly when asked if he was worth the price paid for him.

“No, but I am very grateful that Barcelona did what it had to do complete my childhood, to be with my idols,” he said. Formalities done after signing his contract, the 21-year-old striker jogged onto the Camp Nou pitch for the first time in his new Barcelona kit bearing the name “Neymar Jr” on the back.

“I am very happy, very moved to be a Barcelona player and fulfill my dream,” Neymar told the tens of thousands of fans who turned out to welcome him.

Earlier yesterday, Iniesta said he expects Neymar to become even better when paired in attack with Messi, the four-time world player of the year. “He is coming to the best possible place for him,” Iniesta said. “Let him do what he does best, that is enough. It is great news that we can count on him. Surrounded by the people he will have here, he will get better and better. “Great players always understand one another. Leo will be make Neymar better, and Neymar will make Leo better.”

Dani Alves recalled the long line of Brazilian forwards who have triumphed at Barcelona, including Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho. “He will give us a Brazilian touch,” countryman Dani Alves said of Neymar. “The others left their mark. I am sure he will, too.” Neymar flew to the Mediterranean city on a private jet with a small entourage, including his father Neymar Silva Santos, that left Rio de Janeiro after the national side’s 2-2 draw with England on Sunday.

He will return to his home country for the upcoming Confederations Cup, which Brazil is hosting in preparation for the 2014 World Cup. Neymar led Santos on its greatest run since Pele stopped playing for the Brazilian club in the 1970s.

He helped Santos win the 2010 Brazilian Cup, the 2011 Copa Libertadores and three straight Sao Paulo state championships, becoming the team’s leading scorer in the post-Pele era with 138 goals in 230 matches.

French Open Tennis: Tsonga stuns Roger Federer

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sent Roger Federer crashing out of the French Open quarter-finals to take a step closer to ending France’s 30-year wait for a men’s champion at Roland Garros.

Sixth-seed Tsonga swept to a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 triumph to reach his first semi-final in Paris and first by a home player since Gael Monfils in 2008.

The 28-year-old will tackle Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer for a place in Sunday’s final. Victory also helped wipe out the misery of his quarter-final in Paris last year where he had four match points over Novak Djokovic and lost in five sets.

“It’s extraordinary to be here and to have won,” said Tsonga, who hopes to follow in the footsteps of Yannick Noah, France’s last men’s champion in Paris in 1983.

“I never dreamt of this moment. Today was my moment against a champion who has won everything.

“I didn’t think I would get this far without losing a set. But Ferrer has not lost a set as well, he’s in great form.”

Federer, in his 36th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, was bidding to win a record 58th career match at Roland Garros and reach his 34th semi-final at a major.

The 17-time Grand Slam title winner also had the advantage of a 9-3 career lead over the French star, but Tsonga had been the man to beat Federer from two sets to love down in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2011.

“It was a bad day, it’s a crushing disappointment,” said Federer.

“But I will forget about it quickly, I usually do. “Give a lot of credit to Jo, he turns defence into attack very quickly and has got a big game. He can take time away from you and has a lot of confidence. That’s a big part of his game.”

Tsonga had reached the quarter-finals without dropping a set, while 31-year-old Federer had struggled in his fourth round win over Gilles Simon where he had to come back from two sets to one down.

Former Bangladesh captain Ashraful admits to match-fixing

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Mohammad Ashraful on Tuesday admitted match-fixing and apologised for the latest damaging scandal to hit the sport.

“I should have not done this injustice to the nation. I feel guilty,” he told the Independent TV channel in a televised interview.

“I would only say ‘Please all forgive me, my conduct was improper’,” he added.

His apology came shortly after the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan announced the right-handed batsman had been suspended pending the full report of an investigation by the International Cricket Council.

The ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has been probing allegations of match-fixing during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), a Twenty20 competition.

“I felt that I have done an injustice, so I have told them (the ACSU team) the truth at the first chance. I tried to help the ICC as much as I could for the welfare of our cricket,” Ashraful said.

“You all know me, I have been playing international cricket for 12 years. I did not tell them a single lie,” he added.

Ashraful became the country’s youngest Test centurion in 2001 at the age of 17 and captained Bangladesh between 2007 and 2009.

The alleged fixing involves a match between the Dhaka Gladiators and the Chittagong Kings teams during the second edition of the BPL.

Local media have reported that 28-year-old Gladiators star Ashraful was allegedly paid about one million taka ($12,800) to lose the February 2 match.
