Youth from Calgary also charged in April 17 shooting at Newton residence

SURREY RCMP announced on Tuesday that a male youth from Calgary, Alberta, has also been arrested and charged in relation to a shooting at a residence in the Newton area in the 14800-block of 76 Avenue on April 17, 2023, that left one man injured. The victim was in a vehicle in the residential driveway.

Police said at the time that their initial investigation indicated that a white van was seen fleeing the scene. Surrey RCMP said that they would be working to determine if a subsequent vehicle fire found nearby at 147 Street and 69 Avenue was connected to the shooting investigation.

Following the shooting, the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit began an in-depth investigation and in July, a 19-year-old man, Akoch Piot from Calgary, was arrested and charged.

The ongoing investigation also led to officers identifying a second suspect, who is a male youth from Calgary.

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Investigators worked in coordination with Calgary Police Service, K-Division ALERT, BC Sheriffs and BC Provincial Crown.

On December 14, 2023, BC Prosecution Service laid the following charges against the male youth: attempt murder; discharge firearm with intent; arson damaging property; possession of a prohibited weapon; and possession of a loaded firearm.

The male youth was taken into custody in Calgary on December 14, 2023. With the assistance of the Calgary Police, the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime team facilitated his transfer back to British Columbia where he remains in custody.

“This marks another successful conclusion to a complex investigation that saw the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit arrest the two suspects who were at the time residing in another province,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Cpl. James Mason. The hard work put into this investigation underscores the fact that the Surrey RCMP is committed to finding individuals near and far who have committed crimes in Surrey.”

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit said there are no outstanding suspects in relation to this investigation, and it is grateful for any information provided to investigators which assisted this investigation.
