14 arrests during protest in East Vancouver

VANCOUVER Police made 14 arrests on Friday afternoon after protesters blocked traffic and the Canadian National Railway in East Vancouver.

“Unlawful protests that block vital infrastructure put peoples’ safety at risk,” said Constable Tania Visintin. “Our officers worked quickly, with help from CN Police and Metro Vancouver Transit Police, to prevent a prolonged blockade on the train tracks and to keep traffic moving.”

Just after 11 a.m. on Friday, a 9-1-1 caller advised that approximately 100 protesters, some masked with balaclavas, were blocking vehicle and train traffic in the intersection of Kaslo Street and Grandview Highway.

Protesters refused multiple requests by police to move off the road and tracks. Some members in the group became hostile with police.

Fourteen protesters were arrested for mischief and obstruction at 2:30 p.m. VPD investigators will work to collect evidence and recommend charges to Crown counsel, police said.
