RIDGE Meadows RCMP are investigating a fatal motor vehicle incident that occurred on Friday evening in Maple Ridge.
On January 5 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP frontline officers responded to reports of a serious collision on the Haney Bypass near 227 Street in Maple Ridge. Police arrived at scene to find a white Pontiac Sunfire and a grey Honda Civic with major damage.
Initial reports and eyewitness accounts indicate that the Pontiac Sunfire travelled into an oncoming lane before colliding with the Honda Civic. A third vehicle, a Kia Rio, was also damaged by flying debris from the collision but the driver did not sustain any injuries.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and the Maple Ridge Fire Department (MRFD) were at the scene of the collision when police arrived. The driver of the Pontiac Sunfire, a 39-year-old male from Abbotsford, was pronounced dead at scene by BCEHS.
BCEHS transported the driver of the Honda Civic, who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, to hospital.
The Investigational Support Team (IST) and the Integrated Reconstruction Analysis Reconstruction Team (ICARS) were called out to assist with the investigation and Haney Bypass between Burnett Street and 227 Street was shut down for several hours after the collision. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor at this time.
This is currently an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.
